UHV to unveil new school song (with audio interview)

Lon Gonzalez: 00:00
If you think about it for a minute, every institution of higher learning has a school song. It creates unity and support for those who attend that school. And while there's lots of support and unity at the University of Houston-Victoria, the school has no school song; until now.

Paula Cobler: 00:19
While UHV started in 1973 as a upper level institution and actually we have only had freshmen and sophomores on our Victoria campus since fall of 2010. So this is a student led initiative. We have been rolling out different traditions over the last few years. We've added sports, we have a school mascot, um, and now we're going to have a school song also.

Lon Gonzalez: 00:49
That's Paula Cobler, Director of Marketing and Communications with UHV. She adds at the expansion of the school over the course of time has led to this point and the students at UHV were heard on the issue.

Paula Cobler: 01:02
This was an initiative led by our Student Government Association asking faculty, staff and students to give ideas for the song. At the end, there was a committee made up of interested faculty, staff, students and alumni who worked on kind of the finishing touches of the song, and then we'll be rolling it out on Wednesday.

Lon Gonzalez: 01:25
And the big announcement will come tomorrow. The official Alma Mater finally being unveiled and sung in public.

Paula Cobler: 01:30
Well, we're using some traditional alma mater music that is not under copyright anymore. Um, and so we don't have anybody practicing it, but we will have a recording playing. We have a very talented UHV student who will be singing it for the first time for everybody. And then we'll give everybody the words, talk a little bit about how the song was developed and we'll all sing it together at the end.

Lon Gonzalez: 01:56
Cobler added that in the future, the school might also have a fight song. The big reveal for the Alma Mater will take place tomorrow at the UHV pyramid row at 10:00 AM.
