Bergstrom, Longoria named athletes of the year

University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars juniors Emily Bergstrom and John Longoria were named the Jaguars first Athletes of the Year on Thursday during the first UHV athletic awards banquet held at Schroeder Hall.

Bergstrom (El Campo) has been instrumental in the Jaguars success on the softball field this season where the left-hander has compiled a 19-4 record with a 1.62 ERA in the circle and tossed the Jaguars first-ever perfect game. She’s the only Jaguar to earn NAIA National Pitcher of the Week honors this season and is a two-time Association of Independent Institutions Female Athlete of the Week award winner.

She is UHV’s single-season wins leader with 19 and currently is the single-season ERA leader with her 1.62 ERA. She also is currently UHV’s single-season leader in fewest walks allowed with eight.

Longoria (Spring) leads the Jaguars baseball team in nearly every offensive category and has been a key to UHV’s 29-23 record.

The first baseman-outfielder has compiled a .376 batting average in 51 games banging out 64 hits including 22 doubles and four triples. He has 49 RBI, 112 total bases, a .659 slugging percentage and has been hit by a pitch five times. He is second in home runs with six and third on the team in runs scored with 36.

Both Bergstrom and Longoria received the Player of the Year award in their respective sport. Other player of the year awards went to Rommel Morales in men’s soccer, Sarah Saldivar in women’s soccer, James Price in men’s golf, Morgan DeSive in women’s golf.
