The public is invited to attend the University of Houston-Victoria second annual Psychology Student Conference from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.

Anitra Shelton-Quinn, assistant psychology professor and director of the UHV school psychology program, said the conference will allow students to showcase their research, get the latest information in the field, and scout for job openings.

“Students and the public will learn about the application of psychological techniques and concepts,” she said. “There will be lots of information for anyone interested in psychology. The conference will cover many areas we deal with regularly, such as depression and bipolar disorder, and the community services and techniques used by psychologists to treat such disorders.”

Graduate psychology students will compete in a research poster competition, featuring ideas and themes about their work.

“Our graduate students also will make up panels that will discuss the latest trends and developments in school psychology and counseling psychology,” Shelton-Quinn said.

A job board also will be available, and there will be brochures and handouts for students, practitioners and community members.

Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences, said the conference is an opportunity to glean a lot of information about the field in a short amount of time.

“Events such as these help our bachelor’s- and master’s-level students learn to think critically and communicate effectively within the psychology field,” he said. “We are proud of our growing psychology department, and this conference is one example of how we are reaching out to our students in the field.”
