Whether someone is at a soccer game on a crisp fall day or a baseball game in the scorching summer heat, athletic events are just more fun when the crowd is loud and excited.
University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Brett Kelley wants that attitude to catch on at the university.
The sports fan, who attends all UHV baseball and softball games, will soon take over Jag Warriors, the university’s school spirit organization, and he plans to hit the fields in full force.
“You look at the stands during different games and they’re decent, but they’re full of parents and older people,” he said. “I want to get more students out there. It’s more fun, and it intimidates the other team.”
Kelley also is an active member of the UHV Student Senate, and he enjoys both learning what goes on at the school and doing what he can to better the university. School personnel recently met with the senate regarding issues such as the UHV website.
The senate usually develops one student resolution a year, typically aimed at bringing change to the UHV campus.
Kelley is happy knowing what he does makes a difference.
“Not everybody gets to do that,” the 20-year-old said.
The Corpus Christi native studies nursing at UHV and hopes to pursue a career in hospital administration.
“I like knowing that, in that field, you’re not going to see the same thing over and over,” Kelley said. “It’s something new every day.”
Away from the classroom and student meetings, he enjoys being outside, fishing and hunting. He also enjoys watching football and baseball.
Kelley encouraged other students to get involved on campus, since it’s a good way to make friends and for students to become a part of something bigger.
A good way to get started is to attend student senate meetings. Students can listen in and voice their opinions, though they can’t vote.
“We welcome people’s ideas,” he said. “The more ideas we have, the more fun students’ lives can be on campus. It does make a difference.”
