Some people move through life going with the flow, but University of Houston-Victoria freshman Taylor Henderson opts for a slightly more rhythmic path.
She chooses to dance to the beat.
The dancing bug first bit the San Antonio native during high school, while she was looking to join an extracurricular activity. She went out for the drill team, made it, and found a pastime that simply fit.
“I realized it was something I loved doing,” she said. “I really enjoyed it.”
Henderson continued her hobby throughout high school and, today, is among the first members of UHV’s Jaguar Jazz Team.
Her role with the student organization offers more than just a chance to continue her love of dance, however. With her previous experience, she helps others develop their art.
“You’ve got to have a lot of patience, and sometimes it takes time, but it’s really fun,” she said of her ability to help out. “When you teach others, you realize it’s really worth it.”
Henderson graduated from Karen Wagner High School this year and moved on to UHV after attending a recruitment presentation.
A biology major, Henderson hopes to eventually enter the medical field.
“I go back and forth,” she said. “Sometimes I think I want to become a podiatrist or a pediatrician. As of now, I want to be a dentist because I love teeth.”
Luckily, the 18-year-old still has plenty of time to decide.
While she still might be new on the college scene, Henderson has adapted well. Time management skills help, she explained, and a strong social network – which she found in her residence hall – doesn’t hurt, either.
“I have sleepovers in my room every Thursday, where my friends and I watch movies and talk,” she said. “We just carry each others’ mattresses upstairs or across the hall. It’s great.”
Henderson urged other students just starting out in school to take a deep breath, relax and enjoy it. She was nervous at first, but found it got easier with time.
“Anything new is going to be scary,” she said. “But just take it a day at a time, step by step. Don’t over think it.”
