Readers of the Writing Lab Newsletter recently got some helpful advice thanks to Summer Leibensperger, coordinator of the University of Houston-Victoria Academic Center, who published an article in the newsletter drawing on her experiences at UHV.
Titled “An Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets,” the article was aimed at directors and managers of writing centers who also have to fill the role of Webmaster for their centers. The article examines the time-saving benefits of using style sheets and explains some basic CSS rules.
“Web sites allow writing centers to do simple tasks like advertising hours and services,” Leibensperger said, “as well as more complex tasks like providing a library of resources or serving as an entryway for asynchronous or synchronous tutoring.”
UHV’s Academic Center is a resource for students, faculty and staff that provides both online and face-to-face tutoring. In addition to its writing assistance, subject-area tutoring and testing services, the center maintains a comprehensive Web site that contains writing and English language resources. The center also publishes a weekly grammar tip e-mail called “Grammatically Correct.”
The Writing Lab Newsletter is a publication of the International Writing Centers Association. Founded in 1983, the IWCA provides the opportunity for writing centers, which focus on one-on-one writing instruction, to exchange information, ideas and concerns. The newsletter is aimed at college, university, and high school writing centers around the world and is published monthly.
