UHV to play host to Claud Jacobs Invitational

Claud Jacobs talks to the media at a news conference about the Claud Jacobs/Victoria Country Club Collegiate Invitational becoming part of the University of Houston-Victoria golf program.

For the past two years the University of Houston-Victoria women’s golf team has participated in the Claud Jacobs/Victoria Country Club Collegiate Invitational golf tournament. Now, the Jaguars will be playing host to the annual event.

The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon during a news conference at the university’s Center Building.

Texas State University has played host to the event the past several years at Victoria Country Club, and with the change in hosts comes a change in format for the tournament.

Solely a women’s collegiate tournament over the past several years, the event will now include both a men’s and women’s division in an exclusively National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament. It will also utilize two of Victoria’s three golf courses.

The men’s tournament will be played at Victoria Country Club, while the women’s event will move to The Club at Colony Creek. This year’s tournament is schedule for Feb. 16-18 with the men’s event set for 54 holes and the women’s 36. Play is expected to begin each morning at 8:30 a.m., with a college-am event to open the two-day tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The move is expected to be beneficial to both the UHV golf program, which just completed its second season of competition, and the City of Victoria.

Among the teams that have already committed to the event are the University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) men’s and women’s squads. The Vikes are the defending A.I.I. men’s conference champions and are ranked No. 7 in the nation. Also expected to be in the field are Top 25 teams Wayland Baptist (men and women) and Grand View (Iowa).

Victoria has played host to numerous collegiate and professional tour events and the University of Houston-Victoria is excited to be bringing this event to the community.
