Learn tools for business financial management at SBDC seminar

A highly praised, four-part seminar designed to help individuals enhance their financial management skills is coming in October to the University of Houston-Victoria.

Sponsored by the UHV Small Business Development Center, “Profit Mastery: Get Control of Your Business” is an internationally acclaimed seminar for business owners, managers, accountants, bookkeepers, bankers, consultants and investors.

It will be take place from 8 a.m. to noon every Friday in October at the SBDC office, 3402 N. Ben Wilson St. The first session is Oct. 5. Seating is limited to the first 10 applicants.

“Statistics show that more than half of all businesses that fail each year do so despite reporting profits and record sales,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “The most successful businesses have found that the key to long-term success revolves around effective financial management. The UHV SBDC is committed to the enduring success of the small business community in our 11-county region by providing this kind of education.”

The series will include sessions about cash flow and growth planning; financial statement analysis; cost, volume and pricing issues; and how to determine the right kind of financing for businesses. Participants will practice teaching points by using case studies and discussing real-life examples.

The seminar includes presentations by Steve LeFever, founder and chairman of Business Resource Services. Based in Seattle, Business Resources Services is a national leader in the development of practical financial programs and training for the business community.

Humphreys will lead the classroom portion of the seminar.

“Attendees will not only receive a lot of useful tools from this powerful presentation, but they will also learn a new way use their financial statements,” Humphreys said. “Mr. LeFever’s experience as a successful entrepreneur and a commercial banker has given him a unique perspective and presentation style.”

The seminar qualifies for 16 hours of Continuing Professional Education credits for Certified Public Accountants. Business Resource Services is recognized as a CPE sponsor by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. Certificates will be presented at the completion of the fourth day. Participants should dress comfortably and bring a calculator.

Registration is $395 and includes training materials and a light breakfast. Businesses sending multiple participants can receive a $50 discount for the second and subsequent registrations. Scholarships are available on a limited basis. Registration is available online at tinyurl.com/94fyjmv.

The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster. It also helps new businesses start and existing businesses expand through a combination of consulting and training in areas like market identification, raising capital and developing a business plan. Most of its services are free to area small business owners. The center serves Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Goliad, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties.
