Crossroads-area small business owners are invited Wednesday to attend a free workshop that could improve their chances of landing a government contract.

The University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center will present Small Business Administration Small Business Certification from 10 a.m.
to noon Wednesday at the UHV SBDC office, 3402 N. Ben Wilson St.
The seminar focuses on why certification as a minority, woman-owned or disadvantaged business could be beneficial.
“Federal, state and local governments need a wide range of products and services,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “Of course this produces a number
of business opportunities, and many government agencies require that some percentage of the procurements be set aside for small businesses. This workshop
will delve into the do’s and don’ts of certification to help small business owners and managers decide which certification is right.”

Sean P. Smith |
Sean P. Smith, a business opportunities specialist at the U.S. Small Business Administration San Antonio District office, will lead the discussion. Smith works with firms participating in the SBA 8(a) Business Development, a business assistance program
for small, disadvantaged businesses.
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about the processes, benefits and documentation required for certification.
The UHV SBDC is part of a nationwide small business assistance program serving the small business community, in partnership with federal, state and local
governments. The center offers business advising, training and technical assistance to existing and startup businesses in an 11-county area.
Participates are asked to sign up for the workshop by Monday. To register, call 361-485-4485 or toll free at 1-877-895-7232, or email sbdc@uhv.edu.
