The University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center is bringing back its popular QuickBooks workshop series to help Crossroads entrepreneurs improve their bookkeeping skills and learn more about the accounting software.
The QuickBooks Series is a set of six interactive weekly workshops about the latest version of the software. The series runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday from Feb. 8 to March 22 in Room 216 of UHV University North, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The deadline for registration is Feb. 7, and the series costs $200 a person.
“QuickBooks is a helpful tool for small business owners, and we saw a desire in the area to learn more about this software,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “We want to help people get started on the right foot. It’s much easier to start off well than having to go back and fix your problems.”
The series was developed to help individual business owners who already have the program and might be struggling to understand the system. It’s a great hands-on learning experience for entrepreneurs who are also just starting to use the QuickBooks software, Humphreys said.
During the first session, attendees will receive an introduction to the software and learn the basics of how to input information and use the different tools. The rest of the sessions will allow attendees to build a company profile in the software and learn step by step how to do tasks such as financial analyses or reporting.
“Technology is a resource that can benefit entrepreneurs at any stage in business development,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “The UHV SBDC and UHV School of Business Administration are both dedicated to helping small businesses in the Crossroads succeed, and this series will give people a working knowledge of one of the most well-known accounting programs available.”
The course will be taught by Mark Martinez, a UHV SBDC business advisor. Martinez is a QuickBooks Pro advisor who has been trained and certified by QuickBooks to teach the course.

- Feb. 15 – Setting Up a Chart of Accounts
- Feb. 22 – Creating and Working with Lists
- March 1 – Entering and Paying Bills
- March 8 – Receiving Payments and Making Deposits
- March 22 – Analyzing Financial Data
