Solid pitching and plenty of hitting were the keys to the UHV Jaguars (6-1) weekend sweep of the LSU-Alexandria Generals (2-5).
Saturday night before an estimated crowd of 1,100, Ray Maldonado stuck out a UHV record 14 batters in pacing the Jaguars to an 8-0 win. Maldonado improved to 2-0 with the win. John West’s second home run of the season sparked a 5 run first inning as the Jaguars took early control of the game.
Sunday, the Jaguars’ hot hitting continued as the Jags pounded out 29 hits and 27 runs in winning both ends of the double header from LSUA.
Game 1 was a 15-6 win. Casey Newman picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Austin Hitt. Jon McDonald was 5-5 with 2 RBI while David Baker and Pat Ford each hit solo home runs.
Game 2 was more of the same. Brandon Castolenia, who threw a no-hitter his first start of the year two weeks ago against Laredo Community College, overcame a shaky first inning to improve to 2-0. Castolenia gave up 2 runs in the top of the first on 2 hits, including a lead off home run to Cody Laprarie. Castolenia then limited the Generals to 1 hit over the next 5 innings before the game was called with 2 outs in the bottom of the sixth because of the 10 run rule.
Senior Business Major Chris Joseph had a game high 3 runs batted in.
