Book by UHV Professor Now Available

Dr. Li Chao, associate professor of computer science and mathematics at the University of Houston-Victoria, recently added another accomplishment to his resume. His first book, Database Development and Management was issued by Auerbach Publications just in time for the new year.

Available through CRC Press, the book is intended to help people involved in designing databases and will be particularly interesting to students and professors in computer science and information systems. It explains all aspects of database design, access, implementation and management, as well as data analysis for business intelligence. The book also shows how to develop sophisticated applications based on the information provided.

Writing such a comprehensive book was no small undertaking. Chao worked for two years on the project, finally completing it in June 2005. Now that it is in publication, he is free to pursue new projects including developing course materials for online database classes.

“Dr. Chao is one of the most gifted instructors in the School of Arts and Sciences,” said Dr. Jeffrey R. Di Leo, interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “His book will be extremely useful to students striving to master database design and a valuable resource for instructors of computer science and information systems. I’m confident that both our undergraduate students and the graduate students in our new M.S. program in computer information systems will benefit greatly from Dr. Chao’s book.”

Chao has taught at UHV since 1995. He holds two doctorates--one in statistics and the other in applied mathematics--both from the University of Wyoming. Chao is certified as an Oracle Database Administrator and Microsoft Solution Developer.
