Public welcome at UHV Teacher Job Fair

Education students, teachers and community members interested in the teaching profession can talk with representatives from 27 Texas school districts in one location at the University of Houston-Victoria Spring 2008 Teacher Job Fair.

University of Houston-Victoria Career Services Assistant Laura Baker, left, checks in student teachers at the university’s Fall 2007 Teacher Job Fair. The spring job fair will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center.
The fair will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Room of UHV’s University Center building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson.

Representatives from the UHV School of Education & Human Development also will be at the fair to discuss teaching degree program options.

School districts represented will include San Antonio Northside, which is sending personnel for the first time. Houston-area districts such as Katy, Lamar Consolidated, Rice, Alief and Sealy also will send representatives, as will Victoria and surrounding districts.

"As more districts learn about the quality of our graduates, an increasing number are coming to meet and interview our students," said John Stansell, dean of the School of Education & Human Development.

UHV Career Services has sponsored the fair each semester since the fall of 2003 as a way to connect employers with UHV graduating education students, Career Services Coordinator Eunice Mesa said.

"We started this event solely for our UHV student teachers, but there's just such a tremendous need within the teaching field that we've opened it up to the public," she said.

Teachers interested in moving to a new school district can go to one location to talk to potential employers. Community members who are considering entering the teaching profession also are encouraged to attend to learn more about getting their teaching degree.

Those interested in coming do not need to register in advance. They should dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes, Mesa said.
