"Being invited to the regional tournament is quite an accomplishment for a first-year program," UHV President Tim Hudson said. "Keri Lambeth and our student-athletes have done a remarkable job on the field getting to the tournament, but I am just as proud of their work off the field. Their work as mentors of at-risk youth in the community and their attention to their studies will pay off in greater ways."
The Jaguars are joined by Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) Tournament Champions Northwood University (the No. 5 seed), and the College of the Southwest (No. 6), the RRAC tournament runners-up.
The Jaguars will play Northwood University in their opening-round game at 10 a.m. Thursday.
"We've worked hard all year long – in the weight room, in the pool, on the field and, most importantly, in the classroom – to reach this point." head coach Keri Lambeth said. "When we set our goals at the beginning of the season, qualifying for the regional tournament was at the top of the list."
The other teams qualifying for the tournament from the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Championship Tournament are Oklahoma City University (No. 1), and St. Gregory’s University (No. 2). The Sooner Athletic Conference’s Lubbock Christian University (No. 3) received the other at-large bid.
Hudson is hopeful the Jaguars’ season will not end soon.
"I hope they will be crowned region champions and advance to the national championships next week in Decatur, Alabama," Hudson said. "Go Jags!"
UHV finished the regular season with a record of 30 wins and 16 losses. The Jaguars closed strongly, winning eight of their last nine games. The lone loss during that stretch happened on April 19 against Oklahoma City University in the finals of the OCU Capital City Classic Tournament.
Four of the six teams competing in this week’s regional tournament are ranked in the NAIA top 25 (as of April 30): OCU (No. 3), SGU (No. 6), LCU (No. 9), UHV (No. 19).
