UHV professor and student collaboration to be published, presented

A paper prepared by a University of Houston-Victoria professor and his former student will be published in an upcoming journal and presented at a conference in October.

Mel Damodaran

Computer science professor Mel Damodaran and UHV graduate Wes Carew wrote "X-Windows, GUI (Graphical User Interface) Programming, and Microsoft Windows," which will be published in the October issue of the scholarly journal Issues in Information Systems.

Damodaran will make a 20-minute presentation based on the article at the 48th Annual International Association of Computer Information Systems International Conference Oct. 1 to 4 in Savannah, Ga.

"This was an extensive paper that required a great deal of collaboration," Damodaran said. "I'm very proud of the quality of the work we created."

Carew said he enjoyed working on the paper with Damodaran.

"We developed a one-on-one rapport because of our shared views and experiences," he said.

The article covers the history of the X-Windows operating system used by Unix computers and the role the software played in the design of the ubiquitous Microsoft Windows and other software. It also discusses how programmers should keep an open mind when designing a graphic interface and not be afraid to look to older designs for ideas.

Damodaran and Carew created the paper by collaborating largely through e-mail.

Carew graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems in 2007 from the School of Arts & Sciences.
