UHV Nursing Forum explores frontiers of the profession

Nurses and nursing students will find out just how broad the nursing field is at an Aug. 7 University of Houston-Victoria Nursing Forum.

Denise Neill
"With a little additional education, whole new worlds open up," said Denise Neill, co-interim director of the UHV School of Nursing. "And the best part is that nurses can get that extra training right here at UHV."

Nursing leaders and professionals from around the area will talk about how nurses can become program and facility managers, community educators or even teach other nurses.

"This is a great opportunity to find out about all the options available," Neill said.

She explained a few of the nursing career opportunities that will be discussed at the forum.

Bachelor's degree nurses can seek certification in specialized areas ranging from advanced oncology to holistic medicine. BSNs are often utilized for shift supervisors or other middle-management positions with better hours and pay than frontline caregivers.

Master's degree nurses with administration focuses can run medical units or entire facilities. Master's degree nurses with educator focuses can train new nurses at community colleges.

"Nursing is such a vast field with so many different ways to help people live better and healthier," Neill said.

The symposium will offer two sessions, 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m., to accommodate different schedules. Both sessions will meet in the Alcorn Auditorium of the University West building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson.

The event is free, and refreshments will be served.

Attendees are asked to RSVP by calling 361-570-4298 by July 31, but walk-ins are welcome. For more information, contact Tammy Neeley Whatley at 361-570-4297.
