National website gives UHV student body, multiple programs strong rankings

The University of Houston-Victoria recently received recognition from a national website for its ethnic diversity as well as its excellent degree programs in psychology, computer information systems, business and interdisciplinary studies.

David Cockrum

College Factual compares all universities in the U.S. using several criteria. UHV was ranked in the top 7.8 percent of institutions of higher education for the ethnic diversity of its students.

“UHV values diversity in our student body, our faculty and our staff,” said David Cockrum, UHV interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. “The university is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, and we celebrate all cultures on campus. This ranking is a welcome nod to our diversity.”

Part of UHV’s diversity is because a large number of students from other countries are pursuing UHV degrees. One hundred forty-four UHV students are attending the university on student or other temporary visas. Their presence adds a new dimension to UHV’s culture, said Ludmi Herath, UHV International Programs director.

“International students bring a different kind of diversity to campus because they bring some of their home cultures with them,” Herath said. “Their involvement and interaction with other students brings more depth to UHV’s culture.”

UHV also has several programs and concentrations that College Factual ranked strongly. These included accounting, business management and marketing, computer and information sciences, computer information systems, multi/interdisciplinary studies and psychology.

“It is exciting to see so many of UHV’s programs and concentrations receive recognition for excellence among other institutions,” Cockrum said. “These rankings confirm that the university’s dedication to providing an excellent, affordable and accessible education is having a positive effect.”

The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region, offers courses leading to more than 65 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and concentrations in the schools of Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education & Human Development, and Nursing. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus as well as teaching sites in Fort Bend and Harris counties, and online classes that students can take from anywhere. Since its founding in 1973, UHV has provided students with a quality university education from excellent faculty at an affordable price.
