UHV president launches new blog to connect with community

When University of Houston-Victoria President Bob Glenn started his new job in August, he saw a need for more communication between administrators and faculty, staff, students and the community. He came up with the idea to start a blog.

“I want people to know that they can interact with their university’s president and share their ideas and thoughts,” Glenn said. “UHV has amazing community support and outstanding faculty and staff. I’m hoping this blog will help them feel more connected and give them a platform.”

In October, Glenn launched his new blog, “A Jaguar Journey: My Freshman Year.” He makes weekly posts about topics relevant to the university and shares how he is settling in to his role as UHV’s president.

In one of his recent posts, Glenn shared a story about how a presentation he gave years ago positively impacted someone who reached out to him through Facebook Messenger. That message reminded him that people who work in education have the opportunity to make a positive impact on others.

“Every encounter we have gives us a chance to make a difference that we may not know about until 30 years later,” he stated in his post. “But I would argue that we should start every day knowing that we have a chance today to impact another person. Not every person in every job has that opportunity or that responsibility. I would argue that making a difference in the life of another person is a responsibility. It is not to be taken lightly, and it is not to be ignored.”

In his other posts, Glenn has expressed his excitement after moving to Victoria and seeing UHV’s potential for growth. He also has posted about meeting with community leaders to discuss the university’s future in Victoria, asked for input about what skills the university’s next provost should possess, and summarized the awards given during the 2017-2018 UHV President’s Annual Report & Excellence Awards event on Nov. 13.

As he continues to share his experiences as UHV’s president and as a new member of the Victoria community, Glenn hopes more of the university’s faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the community, will take time to read his posts and share their thoughts.

“Having conversations with others and getting their feedback is the whole notion behind this,” he said. “In time, I’m hoping to see a strong response that will offer some positive and constructive feedback for me and the university as a whole.”
