The University of Houston-Victoria “Keepin’ it Fresh at UHV” 2019 Homecoming Week starts Monday, and community members are encouraged to attend several events.

Hilary Kofron

“We’re excited to invite the community to participate in events that they can enjoy while supporting higher education in the area,” said Hilary Kofron, UHV Student Life director. “We want to bring the Victoria community together and engage them in what’s happening at UHV.”

Students, alumni, faculty, staff and the Victoria community can participate in the week’s festivities by showing their support during the free kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Monday at UHV Pyramid Row, located directly behind the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to inside Jaguar Hall Commons, 2705 Houston Highway.

The kickoff will include an introduction of UHV’s student-athletes, a mascot and cheer team performance, and an introduction of this year’s Homecoming Court. The event will end with a performance from Arts Fishing Club, a folk-rock band.

A March 1 Alumni Banquet also will be open to the public. The banquet will start at 6:30 p.m. in the UHV University North Multi-Purpose Room, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. It will include a beer and wine reception, catered dinner, door prizes, an awards presentation and entertainment featuring returning magic and comedian Robby Bennett. Two UHV graduates also will be recognized.

Ben Galvan, owner of CivilCorp LLC in Victoria, will receive the 2019 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Michele Rohde, president and founder of the financial advisory practice Rohde Financial Group, will be recognized as the Young Alumna of the Year.

“The alumni banquet provides a festive way to reunite with our alumni over dinner,” said Kira Mudd, UHV director of alumni relations and annual giving. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our alma mater, award recipients and supporters. We encourage alumni, their friends and family, and community supporters to attend.”

The cost for the evening is $15 a person, which includes the banquet plus the comedy and magician show. To register, visit www.uhvconnect.org/events.

The public is encouraged to attend the March 2 Homecoming baseball game at Riverside Stadium. A UHV baseball doubleheader will begin at noon against Wiley College. The first pitch will be thrown by 2019 UHV Distinguished Alumnus Ben Galvan. Additional activities and the crowning of this year’s Homecoming king and queen will take place between games.

“We’re excited to see everyone show their pride and support for UHV,” Kofron said. “We hope this theme and events that are open to the public will get everyone involved.”
