UHV to offer two summer softball camps

Area softball players can learn from some of the best in the country this summer.

The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team will hold two summer camps for girls ages 8 to 18, one covering all skills and the other focusing on pitching.

“This is a rare opportunity for local girls to learn softball from nationally recognized college athletes and their coaches,” head coach Keri Lambeth said.

Both camps will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon daily at the St. Joseph O’Connor Athletic Complex, 3006 N. Cameron, behind Tejas Café. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the first day of each camp.

The June 22 to 24 all-skills camp from June 22 to 24 will improve students’ skills in areas like hitting, throwing, catching, running, bunting and game strategy. On the last day, camp members will scrimmage. The cost for the camp is $125.

Among the camp staff will be Tasha Rotramel, a 2009 All-American Honorable Mention.

The July 14 and 15 pitching camp, July 14 and 15, will teach the proper way to throw a fastball, a riser, a changeup, a drop pitch and a screw ball. The cost is $100.

Along with most of the Jaguars team, campers will learn from pitcher Lauren Garza, who led the team in strikeouts in 2008 and 2009 and landed two First Team All-Conference selections.

The registration deadline for both camps is June 19.

Students will need to bring the following supplies:

  • Glove
  • Bat
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Sneakers/cleats

Proceeds from the camp will support the Jaguars travel fund.

“The team has achieved many of its honors because we’ve been able to travel to play some of the best teams in the country,” Lambeth said. “Traveling can get expensive.”

The Jaguars finished their second season with a 35-12 record. They won the Association of Independent Institutions conference championship and made a strong showing at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 2009 National Softball Tournament. The team was ranked 11th in the final national poll.

Team captain Kristen Lindley was named First Team All-American, Designated Player. Right fielder Amber Scott was named to the Second Team.
