University of Houston-Victoria graduate student Katie Moody enjoys helping other students as a peer writing tutor at the Academic Center.
“I work closely with other students to facilitate the writing process,” she said. “Instead of ‘correcting’ papers, the tutors discuss the actual writing process with students.”
Moody became a tutor not only assist her fellow students, but also to further her career and educational goals. The center is a resource for students, faculty and staff that offers tutoring, testing services and writing assistance.
She joined the center her second semester at UHV when she was an undergraduate majoring in English.
“Academic Center Manager Sandra Heinold called and asked me to come join the team,” Moody said.“I was very excited about the opportunity, as I was looking for a job where I could gain experience in the academic working world and better myself in my studies.”
For Moody, peer tutoring has been an invaluable experience because she was able to apply the knowledge she gained at the Academic Center to her studies and achieved skills she will later apply to her professional career.
“I don’t think I would be where I am now if it weren’t for my experience at the Academic Center,” Moody said.
She will begin pursuing a master’s degree in publishing this fall and is an intern this summer at the UHV American Book Review, an internationally distributed journal specializing in reviews of works published by small presses.
“The internship has given me a genuine feel for what the publishing world is like,” Moody said. “It has taught me things about the publishing field that I would not have had the chance to learn without the hands-on experiences I have had at ABR.”
After she graduates, Moody hopes to get hired as an editorial assistant or copy editor and work her way up in the publishing industry.
