Three Victoria Independent School District students show off their artwork that received recognition Wednesday night at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest Reception at the University of Houston-Victoria. First-place winner Alexis Lopez, left, a ninth-grader at Memorial High School, won four years of college, including two years at UHV and two years at The Victoria College, for his artwork “Mis Recuerdos.” Sydney Trevino, center, a seventh-grader at Howell Middle School, won second place and a $1,000 scholarship to UHV or VC for “El Charrito.” Benjamin Fogal, right, also a Howell seventh-grader, won a $500 scholarship to either UHV or VC for “En Paseo.” The scholarships for the second- and third-place winners were donated by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce Minority Business Council. The 91 pieces of artwork submitted to the contest will be on display during regular business hours in the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St., during Hispanic Heritage Month through Oct. 15.
