UHV Professor Elected to Leadership Role in Literacy Organization

Members of the Texas State Reading Association recently elected University of Houston-Victoria professor Jane Fry as the organization’s vice president for 2006-07. According to TSRA’s succession plan, Fry will then progress to roles as president-elect in 2007 and president in 2008.

Fry joined the School of Education and Human Development faculty in 1997, and returned again in 2001 after leaving to teach at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years. She holds a doctoral degree in education from Florida International University.

Since 2001, Fry has been active in TSRA, whose focus on promoting advancement of Texas’ level of literacy quality compliments her own research interests of literacy development, reading comprehension, and literacy leadership. In addition to her responsibilities as vice president, Fry will continue to serve in her role as editor of the organization’s biannual newsletter The Texas Reading Report, a position she assumed in 2005.

Her work on behalf of TSRA in the past has also involved organizing literacy conferences including “Literacy for All Ages and Cultures” hosted at UHV in February.

Founded in 1971, TSRA is an organization based in Austin which brings educators from across the state together to disseminate best literacy practices. In addition, it maintains special interest councils to promote specific areas of research, such as bilingual education and gifted and talented instruction.
