With the recent signing of catcher Marley Moehrig, a senior at Memorial High School in Victoria, the UHV Jaguars freshmen roster continues to grow.
“Miss Moehrig has the skills and character that will make her an excellent addition to our team," said Keri Lambeth, UHV head softball coach. “The word is out in the athletic world that UHV is a great place to play softball, so we’re getting the best players from near and far.”
Moehrig has played softball for 12 years. She made All-District Honorable Mention her sophomore and junior years at MHS, and in the summer of 2009, she went to the national tournament in Las Vegas with her select team, the Victoria-based Texas Trouble.
“Playing college softball is a dream I’ve had since I was a little girl,” Moehrig said. “I can''t wait to start playing for the Jaguars.”
She’s also excited to be a part of the FIRST 200 freshmen at UHV.
“It’s exciting, being able to make history like that,” she said. “It’s pretty cool.”
UHV offered her a small campus with friendly faculty and staff that was close to her family.
“It had everything I was looking for,” Moehrig said.
Jaguars softball fans will have much to look forward to in the 2011 season, Lambeth said.
“Becoming a destination university has really opened up new horizons for us in terms of recruiting players,” she said. “I think we’ve assembled an amazing team that will make everyone proud with what they’ll accomplish next season.”
Other high school seniors who have signed letters of intent to play at UHV include Kara Waukau, Kristina Droz, and Tara Williams, all of Missouri City; and Ashley Winegeart of Corpus Christi.
UHV, which has been an upper-division university offering junior-, senior-, and master’s level classes for its 37-year history, will welcome its first underclassmen in the fall.
The Jaguars softball team is the defending Association of Independent Institutions champions and will serve as the host for the 2010 A.I.I. tournament May 6-8. The team was ranked 21st in country when the final regular season National Association of Collegiate Athletics poll was released on Tuesday.
