FRESNO, Calif. – Jose Quintanilla and David Baker both homered and the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars fought off two late rallies to defeat Ohio Dominican 7-6 on Tuesday in the 2010 National Championship Opening Round Tournament at Fresno Pacific University’s FPU Diamond.
UHV will now face the top-seed British Columbia in a 9 p.m. winner’s bracket game today.
The ODU Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings, before the Jaguars’ offense sprang to life.
Ryan Gilbert opened the fourth with a single and Quintanilla followed with a one-out two-run blast. David Baker then walked and Anthony Phillips reached on an error. Baker would score on a two-out infield single by Jerrod Dugas, and Phillips would race home for a 4-3 lead on a Joey Briones single.
The Panthers regained the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by John Bowron, but the Jaguars would strike back and take the lead for good in the seventh.
Baker belted a two-out solo home run to left center to tie the game and Josh Bromberg doubled home Phillips, who had been hit by a pitch, for the go-ahead run.
The Jaguars added a crucial unearned insurance run in the ninth.
Quintanilla reached on an error and pinch-runner LeSean Thomas stole second and moved to third on another ODU error. Phillips then sliced a two-out single to center to score Thomas.
Reliever Pete Ontiveros had his hands full coming in with two on and no outs in the seventh but got out of the jam for started Zack Moya.
Ontiveros found himself in more trouble in the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs, but got Felix Brown to strikeout to end the inning.
The Panthers got to Ontiveros in the ninth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by John Lydic, but he then got Tyler Zaidel to fly out to Phillips at second to end the game.
