FRESNO, Calif. – Broc Haymon tossed a five-hit shutout and the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars knocked off top-seeded British Columbia 5-0 at FPU Diamond in the NAIA Championship opening round tournament winner’s bracket on Tuesday.
UHV was coming off an earlier 7-6 win and will now face last year’s NAIA runner-up, Point Loma Nazarene in another winner’s bracket game on today at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship round on Thursday. Point Loma Nazarene defeated host Fresno Pacific 14-12 to advance.
Haymon struck out 12 and scattered five hits in tossing a complete game but it was no easy task. He had to work out of three jams, including a bases loaded situation in the ninth.
After striking out the first two batters he faced in the ninth, Haymon walked the next three before getting Alex White to ground to second to end the game.
UBC loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but Haymon got Greg Densom to ground out to second to end the inning.
Andrew Firth then slapped a one-out double and moved to third on a Jaguars error in the eighth, but Haymon struck out the next two batters leaving Firth stranded at third.
The Jaguars scored a pair of solo runs in the second and third for a 2-0 lead and then blew the contest open with a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Joey Briones with two outs.
The Jaguars tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as John Longoria singled to open the inning and Jose Quintanilla was hit by a pitch. David Baker followed with a single to right scoring Longoria.
