Student to explore interests in nursing, ROTC at UHV

Na’Shira Cato is coming to the University of Houston-Victoria in the fall to combine her two interests: nursing and ROTC.

“My mom, Tamika Neasman, went to school when I was little to be a Registered Nurse, and ever since then, I’ve wanted to be one,” said Cato, a Converse resident who recently graduated from Karen Wagner High School in San Antonio.

Cato will be taking classes to get her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and also plans on participating in the Air Force ROTC Affiliate Program that UHV has with the UH main campus.

She was involved with Junior ROTC all four years of high school and was awarded the Coin of Excellence her sophomore year. She also was involved her junior year with DECA, an association for marketing students, and the National Honor Society her junior and senior years. She also stayed busy working part time at a fast food restaurant.

“I had a lot of fun in high school,” she said.

Cato heard about UHV through a friend and became excited about the university when she found out she could combine her interests in ROTC and nursing. She eventually would like to be a nurse in a hospital or the U.S. Air Force.

“I wanted to go to school in Texas, so this just worked out great,” she said.

The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region, offers courses leading to 70 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and concentrations in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as teaching sites in Fort Bend and Harris counties, and online classes that students can take from anywhere.
