University of Houston-Victoria student Ashleigh Kellis-Carr became one of the newest members of the UHV Student Senate in May.
As a senator at large, one of her first responsibilities was promoting the student governing body and a new freshman committee that will advise the Senate. She got her first opportunity during summer freshman orientation sessions.
“I had a lot of fun volunteering at freshman orientations to get students to sign up for the freshmen committee,” she said. “It’s good to focus on your studies, but it’s also important to be involved. This committee is designed to address the unique needs of our first freshman class. The freshmen will get to voice their opinions, views on student life and suggest new activities.”
Kellis-Carr said the committee will consist of eight freshmen and is an important step for the Senate.
“With the new downward expansion at UHV, we have freshmen and sophomores on campus for the first time,” she said. “It’s important they participate in Student Senate as well. We want everyone to be represented.” Kellis-Carr didn’t spend all her time at orientation sessions telling the freshmen about the Senate. She also informed them about other organizations at UHV and discussed how students could create their own organizations. She answered a lot of questions from both students and parents.
“I tried to stress how important it is to be active in your school,” she said. “I should know. My first two semesters at UHV all I did was attend class. I didn’t do anything, and I didn’t feel involved in college life. That’s why I joined the Senate, and now I’ve made new friends, I’ve done new things, and I’ve gotten to volunteer for some great causes.”
Kellis-Carr, a psychology major and Victoria resident, will graduate in the spring. She is a member of Psi Chi, an international honors society for psychology students.
