Leadercast will target first-line employees, managers to empower teams
Crossroads entrepreneurs and aspiring leaders will get a full day of instruction about how to develop and lead healthy teams at the May 17 annual Leadercast Victoria event sponsored by the University of Houston-Victoria.
Leadercast, a worldwide leadership conference in its 19th year, is a full-day webcast from Atlanta. This is the eighth year the UHV Small Business Development Center and the School of Business Administration have hosted Leadercast Victoria, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Our Lady of Victory Cathedral Center, 1309 E. Mesquite Lane.
The theme for this year’s conference is “Leading Healthy Teams.” Attendees will watch presentations by nationally known authors, business founders and leaders, and experts.
“The best leaders know a successful team is made when focus, care, attention and development are directed to its members,” UHV SBDC Director Lindsay Young said. “This year, we want to focus on addressing everybody from higher level positions to the front-line employees of a team. Attendees will learn what it takes to ensure your team functions at its highest and healthiest.”
Tripp Crosby, a comedian and director, will host the broadcast. The speakers are:
- Patrick Lencioni, founder of The Table Group
- Julie Funt, CEO of WhiteSpace at Work
- Andy Stanley, leadership author and communicator
- Caroline Leaf, communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist
- Ginger Hardage, former senior vice president of culture and communications for Southwest Airlines
During lunch, attendees will listen to a presentation by UHV alumnus Mike Smith, head coach of Victoria East High School girls’ golf and former basketball player at Sam Houston State University. Smith, who graduated from UHV with a master’s in education, is in his 20th year of coaching girls’ golf after retiring in 1998 from 20 years coaching basketball. In May 2015, he was inducted into the Texas Basketball Hall of Fame and on Monday, he was named the District 30-5A Coach of the Year.
“Of course, we need to know ourselves in order to lead others, but we also need to know the people we work with on a daily basis in order to work well together,” Smith said. “We must have great empathy with them, know how to communicate, use common sense and put ourselves in their shoes if we want to create a healthy team. I hope attendees will learn new ideas and consider things they hadn’t before.”
Smith’s presentation will be an inspiring and motivational message for audience members, said Whitney Schroeder, UHV SBDC training coordinator.
“Coach Smith has motivated so many individuals for some time now with a message that helps them excel and achieve their goals despite obstacles,” Schroeder said. “He has a skill for bringing out the drive and determination of others to encourage them to succeed. We look forward to hearing from him and the other speakers at Leadercast.”
