UHV softball team earns NAIA scholar-team award

The University of Houston-Victoria softball team was among the 1,939 teams that earned distinction as National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Teams for the 2018-19 academic year.

The NAIA announced the scholar teams on Monday.

The UHV softball team compiled an overall 3.46 GPA. It is the fourth straight year for the team to earn the academic recognition.

Sixteen on the 19 UHV players were selected as Red River Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes, while five were named NAIA Scholar Athletes.

The Benedictine University Mesa women’s golf team was selected as the Scholar-Team of the Year with a 4.0 GPA. The Tabor College women's tennis team followed with a 3.89 collective GPA.

Asbury (Ky.) led the pack with 25 teams represented on the list. Morningside (Iowa) and St. Ambrose (Iowa) followed with 23 teams each making the list.

For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale as defined by the institution. The team grade point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
