UHV athletes sweep A.I.I. weekly honors

Broc Haymon Ashley Winegeart

University of Houston-Victoria senior Broc Haymon and freshman Ashley Winegeart have been named the Association of Independent Institutions Male and Female Athletes of the Week, for the week ending March 28.

Haymon, a left-handed pitcher from Bridge City, pitched his third straight complete game this past week in a 7-1 win over LSU-Alexandria. Haymon struck out 12 in the win and allowed just six hits and two walks over seven innings.

It was also Haymon’s third straight game to record 10-plus strikeouts in a game as he improved to 4-3 on the season.

Winegeart, a shortstop from Corpus Christi, helped the Jaguars to a 5-1 record on the week after hitting at a .500 clip. She went 7-for-14, including a perfect 6-for-6 in two games against seventh-ranked Central Baptist College.

She drove in three runs, scored three runs, had two doubles and a triple, and finished with a .786 slugging percentage in doubleheader sweeps of Prairie View A&M and LSU-Alexandria and a split in a doubleheader against Central Baptist.

Winegeart is the third Jaguars softball player to earn A.I.I. Female Athlete of the Week this season.
