Two UHV Professors Present at State Literacy Conference
The Texas State Reading Association recently hosted its 35th annual literacy conference in Austin, bringing together educators from across the state. The event featured many highly regarded keynote speakers, authors and presenters. Among them were two University of Houston-Victoria professors, Dr. Jane Fry and Dr. Teresa Le Sage.
Presentations for the conference were selected based on the strength of their abstracts through a competitive, juried process. Fry and Le Sage collaborated on a presentation titled “Using Science Journals to Promote Literacy.” Fry also gave a presentation, “Myths and Realities About High Stakes Testing,” individually.
“One of the most basic challenges in education is to promote a fully literate society,” said UHV President Tim Hudson. “I’m proud of the efforts of Dr. Fry and Dr. Le Sage, whose expertise benefits UHV students daily. Now, through this conference, their ideas on teaching will impact students across the state.”
Both Fry and Le Sage teach in the UHV School of Education and Human Development. Le Sage’s teaching areas focus on curriculum and instruction, as well as science education. Fry, who currently serves as vice president of TSRA, focuses her research on literacy development.
TSRA, the state affiliate of the International Reading Association, works to stimulate and promote research and new developments to improve the level of literacy quality in the state of Texas. Each year, the organization hosts a conference as a professional development opportunity for Texas educators of every level interested in literacy.
