Record Registration Among Female and Hispanic Students Helps UHV Achieve Highest Fall Enrollment To Date

For the third consecutive year, fall enrollment at the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) has set a new record. This semester, 2,491 students registered for classes, a 3 percent increase over last year and the largest fall enrollment to date.

UHV raised its total registration in part by also setting new enrollment records among female and Hispanic students. While the number of male students to enroll held steady around 750, 71 more female students enrolled than last year, raising the total from 1,670 students to 1,741. Likewise, the number of enrolled students who were Hispanic rose from 391 to 412.

Enrollment at UHV has topped 2,000 students every fall for the last four years, a landmark achievement for the university which opened its doors to just 100 students in 1973.

“This growth is due in part to UHV’s commitment to outreach,” said UHV President Tim Hudson. “By developing programs like Letting Education Achieve Dreams (LEAD) and supporting the efforts of the Spanish Speaking Initiative Committee, we are able to connect with students who might not otherwise attend and provide them with the resources and opportunity to enroll at UHV.”

Administrators at UHV expect enrollment to continue to rise over the next several years as the university reaches out to new students with increased course offerings and new degree programs. Next fall, students will be able to register for classes in nursing as well as graduate-level courses in computer information sciences, both new programs for the university.

At the core of UHV’s mission is a commitment to provide able students, often with job and family obligations, convenient access to higher education that is affordable, credible and relevant to their lives. The rising registration numbers suggest more and more students are benefiting from that mission.
