University of Houston-Victoria students fill out job applications for the Boys & Girls Club of Victoria during the 2012 Part-Time Job Fair. This year’s fair will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the UHV University Center Multi-Purpose Room.

The University of Houston-Victoria will pair students looking for part-time jobs with local employers needing workers during a Part-Time Job Fair.

The fair will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Multi-Purpose Room of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The event, organized by UHV Career Services, is free for both students and employers. Career Services still is registering local employers interested in having a table at the event.

The job fair started in 2010 when the university first admitted freshmen and sophomores. It is an opportunity to bring together UHV students and local businesses, said Amy Hatmaker, UHV Career Services specialist.

“There are a lot of new students on campus who need supplemental income while they are in college,” she said. “The Part-Time Job Fair is a great opportunity for students to get to know Victoria businesses and what types of part-time jobs are available.”

Representatives from area retail, food service and media businesses; nonprofit organizations; and UHV and other government agencies will be at the fair looking for potential employees. Students are encouraged to dress appropriately and bring resumes.

Job fair participant Marc Hinojosa, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Victoria, said attending the job fair and hiring UHV students has been a wise move for the nonprofit organization.

“Our part-time staff members are required to be enrolled in some form of higher education so that they can serve as a mentor to the children in the truest sense of the word,” he said. “The students show the children that opportunities are out there, and the children look up to them and realize what life after high school can be like for them.”

Hinojosa said that it also benefits the college students, who gain community service experience volunteering at Hopkins Academy, located next door to the Boys & Girls Club, and at various club fundraisers.

“Our part-time student workers really enjoy working here,” he said. “I look forward to finding more employees who want to help the kids at our club.”

Businesses must register by Monday to reserve a spot. Tables, electricity and Wi-Fi will be provided for each business.
