UHV Marketing & Communications earns awards for event materials, folder

UHV Marketing & Communications recently won a MarCom Gold Award for the collateral materials, left, and website for the 2014-2015 President’s Annual Report & Excellence Awards.

The University of Houston-Victoria Marketing & Communications Department recently was recognized in an international creative competition that attracted more than 6,500 entries.

The department’s staff won a MarCom Gold Award for the 2014-2015 President’s Annual Report & Excellence Awards website and collateral pieces. In addition, Akalina Sanchez, a UHV graphic designer, won a gold award for her design of the UHV University North naming pocket folder.

The MarCom Awards is an international competition recognizing outstanding creative achievements by marketing and communication professionals. Entries come from corporate marketing and communications departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies and freelancers. The awards are judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.

The MarCom Awards received entries from the U.S., Canada and 17 other countries. Of those, about 17 percent won platinum awards and 24 percent received gold awards. Approximately 10 percent were given honorable mentions. Gold awards are given to those who exceed the industry norm in terms of quality, creativity and resourcefulness.

Sanchez’s pocket folder design informed community members about naming opportunities for UHV University North. Sanchez incorporated photos and blueprint sketches with descriptions about different areas inside the building. The project also included pockets where information about various donation opportunities could be inserted. She previously received a Gold ADDY award in February for the naming guide from the American Advertising Federation-Corpus Christi.

“Akalina has a gift for creating clean, clear designs with an artistic flare,” said Shane Blucher, UHV creative services manager. “Her work is consistently excellent, and I am pleased to see she has received the recognition she deserves.”

Marketing & Communications’ gold award encompassed the website and event pieces created for the 2014-2015 President’s Annual Report & Excellence Awards. The marketing staff also won two Gold ADDY awards for the 2014-2015 annual report and collateral pieces from AAF-Corpus Christi.

“This is great news for the UHV Marketing & Communications team,” said Paula Cobler, director of the department. “The UHV President’s Annual Report & Excellence Awards is a huge project that involves everyone in the department, and it is exciting and gratifying to see that work receive international recognition.”

Members of UHV Marketing & Communications who worked on the annual report website and event pieces were Cobler; Blucher; Sanchez; Jeremy Shapiro, communications manager; Chris Perez, graphic designer; George Rodriguez, graphic designer; Lonnie Holcombe, web developer; Lauren Emerson, communications specialist; and Della Rampley, administrative secretary.
