Sen. Cornyn to speak at UHV Commencement Dec. 9

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is scheduled to speak at the University of Houston-Victoria fall commencement ceremony. An attendance of nearly 3000, including 300 graduates, is expected at the Sunday, Dec. 9 event at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.

“It is both a pleasure and an honor to have the opportunity to address the graduating class from University of Houston-Victoria this December,” Sen. Cornyn said. “I am always encouraged to see individuals who have embraced their educational careers with discipline and hard work, and pursued a college degree that highlights their individual talents and strengths. I look forward to congratulating this year’s graduating class from University of Houston-Victoria, and encouraging them to continue to reach for success, whether in pursuit of a higher degree or their desired profession.”

“We are very honored to have Senator Cornyn as our commencement speaker,” UHV President Tim Hudson said. “Having such a distinguished member of the Senate, an active supporter of higher education, address UHV graduates signifies that our university is gaining more recognition and prominence.” The commencement ceremony will mark the second time in less than half a year in which Cornyn will address UHV and the community.

A graduate of Trinity University and St. Mary’s School of Law, Cornyn also earned a Masters of Law from the University of Virginia Law School in 1995. The 1994 St. Mary’s Distinguished Law School Graduate was named a Trinity University Distinguished Alumnus in 2001.

As Texas Attorney General from 1999-2002, Cornyn directed many initiatives vital to the interest of Texas families. He was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002.

In addition to serving on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees, Cornyn has worked industriously on behalf of Texas military personnel, played a leading role in securing the nation’s border and has been committed to improving educational opportunity for all Texans.

Cornyn was instrumental in increasing financial aid to college-bound students through his sponsorship the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.
