Jaguars to help area players with softball skills

Area softball players ages 8 to 18 can learn from the nationally ranked UHV Jaguars softball team during a camp June 23 at the St. Joseph-O'Connor Athletic Complex.

"The girls can expect a great coach-to-camper ratio with lots of one-on-one instruction," UHV Head Softball Coach Keri Lambeth said. "It's going to be a fun time."

The UHV Jaguar Softball Camp will kick off with registration from 7:30 to 8 a.m. at the complex, 3006 N. Cameron St., a block northeast of the intersection of Airline and Navarro. Campers can sign up for as many of the day's clinics as they would like. The schedule is:

  • 8-10 a.m. – hitting clinic
  • 10 a.m.-noon – throwing, catching and defense clinic
  • 1-3 p.m. – pitching clinic

The camp costs $35 for one clinic, $60 for two clinics or $85 for three clinics.

The cost includes a camp T-shirt. Jaguars gear also will be sold.

The Monday camp will be taught by UHV softball team members and Lambeth, a former University of Houston catcher who coached the Jaguars to a 32-18 record their inaugural season. The softball team finished the season ranked 15th in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and fourth in Region VI of the NAIA.

"Those who register for the camp will be learning from a talented group of softball players who have proven their skills on the field," Lambeth said.

Lambeth is encouraging players of all skill levels to sign up for the camp. Players will be divided into different skill groups once the camp starts, she said. Her goal is to give the campers a positive learning experience by focusing on quality instruction, fundamentals and strategies.

Proceeds from the camp will be used to fund travel for the softball team during the 2009 season. The team already has tournaments scheduled in Alabama, California and Oklahoma, she said.

Softball players who attend the camp should bring a glove, cleats, batting gloves, helmet, tennis shoes, bat, water bottle, sunscreen and a sack lunch. In case of bad weather, the camp will take place inside The Victoria College gymnasium.

For more information or to register for the camp, contact Lambeth at 361-570-4328 or lambethk@uhv.edu. Space is limited, and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Refunds will not be given after registration, but camp credit will be available if a player cannot attend.
