UHV leadership society inducts new members
University of Houston-Victoria students are prepared to embrace The National Society of Leadership and Success mission after a recent induction ceremony.
More than two dozen students were present during the Dec. 8 induction ceremony, including UHV alumna and chapter advisor Camilla Sutton.
“The National Society of Leadership and Success has a long history of leadership development, and it’s always exciting to introduce new members to the organization,” Sutton said. “I think the new members will benefit immensely from the opportunities available, and the society will benefit from their involvement.”
The UHV chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success was established in spring 2012. Since then, more than 402 members have joined the society and more than 130 members have been inducted. The society’s mission is to build leaders who will make a better world.
During the ceremony, the keynote address was given by Damon Barone, chapter president for The National Society of Leadership Success at the University of Houston-Downtown. Barone was presented with the Excellence in Service to Students Award, exemplifying service to students in a way that supports the society’s mission to build leaders who make a better world.
Sutton said Barone’s speech during the ceremony spoke about his goal to change everyone’s misconceptions about leadership and declare that the broken pieces of our lives can actually enhance our ability to lead.
Barone is a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, has a passion to serve others and has been recognized for being an exceptional leader and role model in the Houston community, Sutton said. During his presentation, Barone taught new society members how to successfully navigate challenges and create a leadership mosaic in the process.
The UHV chapter seeks to grow its executive board and membership. The society is open to graduate and undergraduate students who have a 3.0 grade-point average and have completed required leadership training. Throughout the students’ membership, they will attend leadership trainings and a society orientation, and become involved in success networking teams in which they will interact with each other to set and achieve personal goals.
Through the years, the UHV chapter has given back to the community through partnerships with Adopt-A-Highway, Dorothy O’Connor Pet Adoption Center and Habitat for Humanity.
