UHV Small Business Development Center’s QuickBooks series to return
The University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center’s QuickBooks workshop series is back to aid Crossroads entrepreneurs with their bookkeeping skills and help them learn all about the accounting software, including a new feature.
The QuickBooks Series is a set of six interactive weekly workshops about the latest version of the software. The series runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday from Jan. 23 to Feb. 27 in the Victoria Tower, 1908 N. Laurent St., Suite 400. The deadline for registration is Jan. 20, and the series costs $250 a person.
“Our QuickBooks training classes are designed to meet the needs of each and every attendee,” UHV SBDC Director Joe Humphreys said. “After completing this series, attendees will have the tools and knowledge they need to sufficiently use the software in their businesses.”
The series was developed to help individual business owners who already have the program and might be struggling to understand the system. It’s a great hands-on learning experience for entrepreneurs who also are starting to use the QuickBooks software, Humphreys said.
The first session kicks off Jan. 23. Attendees will receive an introduction to the software and learn the basics of how to input information and use the different tools. The rest of the sessions will allow attendees to build a company profile in the software and learn step by step how to do tasks such as financial analyses or reporting. Attendees also can learn about the new feature that contains a multimonitor view.
“While QuickBooks is user friendly, most people still need training to effectively set up the software, efficiently use appropriate features and ensure their data is being input in a correct manner,” said Mark Martinez, UHV Small Business Development Center business advisor. “Understanding your business’s numbers means understanding your business. If you don’t know your numbers, you don’t know your business.”
The course will be taught by Martinez, who is a QuickBooks Pro advisor and has been trained and certified by QuickBooks to teach the course.

- Jan. 23 – Introduction to QuickBooks
- Jan. 30 – Setting up a Chart of Accounts
- Feb. 6 – Creating and Working with Lists
- Feb. 13 – Entering and Paying Bills
- Feb. 20 – Receiving Payments and Making Deposits
- Feb. 27 – Analyzing Financial Data

The UHV SBDC offers assistance on starting, growing and financing a business; contracting opportunities; and recovering from disaster.
