UHV receives high marks for diversity, value of education

The University of Houston-Victoria recently was acknowledged by the national website College Factual for the university’s ethnic diversity and was named a 2019 “Best College for the Money” for undergraduate students.

College Factual compared all universities in the U.S. using several criteria. UHV was ranked among the top 2.6 percent of institutions of higher education in the nation for the ethnic diversity of its students. It previously listed UHV in the top 7.8 percent in the nation for ethnic diversity in the 2018 ranking.

“UHV is fortunate to serve a student body that represents such a broad range of cultures,” said Beverly Tomek, UHV associate provost and dean of University College. “The university values diversity at all levels, including our faculty and staff. This is a welcome acknowledgement for UHV.”

UHV was named a Hispanic-Serving Institution in 2013. The university’s student population is 37.5 percent Hispanic, 31.5 percent white, 16.7 percent African American, 7.4 percent Asian and 6.9 percent other ethnicities. In addition, UHV has 158 international students.

College Factual also ranked UHV 21st out of 70 Texas institutions as a Best College for the Money for undergraduate students. The website also offered specific rankings for undergraduate students who did or did not receive financial aid. In the ranking for those who did receive aid, UHV also was 21st out of 70 Texas universities. For those students who did not receive aid, UHV was 18th in the state.

College Factual based its rankings on a formula that considered an institution’s average yearly cost, average years to graduate and the total cost for a degree and added that information to the quality rankings for the degree programs.

UHV’s total tuition and fees for the 2018-2019 school year is $7,969 for an undergraduate Texas student who takes 30 semester credit hours. During the 2017-2018 school year, the university awarded about $37 million in financial aid.

UHV also has several programs and concentrations that College Factual ranked strongly. These included accounting, business management and marketing, computer and information sciences, computer information systems, general business, applied arts and sciences, and psychology.

“The university offers many excellent programs, and it is encouraging to see these programs receive recognition through College Factual,” Tomek said. “Affordability is one of UHV’s priorities, in addition to offering an excellent education. These listings are proof of the success and value of our efforts.”
