UHV to host Math & Technology Fair

Learning math can be fun, and technology can help lessons compete with TV and video games.

That’s the message of the Math & Technology Fair hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria School of Education & Human Development from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The conference costs $15, and continuing education credits are available.

“Few people realize how many games and recreational activities are based on math,” said Barba Patton, UHV education professor and chair of initial certification programs. “Once you realize that, you can have all kinds of fun learning about numbers.”

For example, a game with egg cartons can be used to teach addition, she said. Many other hands-on methods for teaching math will be presented by UHV education majors at the fair.

The same technology that distracts children also can be used to engage them in learning, said Dennis Riedesel, a UHV education professor, director of field-based experiences, certification officer and Area III director for the Texas Computer Education Association. TCEA is one of the other organizers of the event.

Teachers can bring lessons in math and other subjects to life with animation, videos and other elements by just learning  a few basic software skills, he said.

Other session topic will include Measurement Magnets, Hip Hop Addition and Subtraction, Using Measurements to Build a Community, and GeoCaching.

The event is sponsored by UHV, the Region III Education Service Center, and the Area III Texas Computer Education Association.

The schedule for the event is as follows. All events are in the Alcorn Auditorium of the UHV University West building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson:
