As a student pursuing a master's degree in counseling, her internship allows her to work with victims of domestic and family violence at Midcoast Family Services.

“There's something about working with victims of family violence that I find rewarding,” Barry said. “It's helping them get out of dangerous situations, but it's also helping them get the most out of their lives.”

She said many of her clients suffer from depression as a result of being abused.

“When they get where they want to be in their lives, they're able to let go of all the pain,” she said. “That's a pretty awesome experience to be a part of.”

Her internship with the nonprofit organization has encouraged Barry to continue working with victims of domestic violence when she graduates. However, she said learning to give herself time away from work was essential to her well-being.

“When you work with people who suffered from abuse, sometimes it's hard not to let it get you down. That's normal,” Barry said. “When I leave work, I say a prayer for all my clients, and then I completely separate myself. When I'm at home, it's about me and my family. I've learned there's so much that goes into counseling, and I love it.”

Barry is a member of the Texas Counseling Association. In addition to her internship, she works full time at Best Buy in Victoria, where she was named the operations department's most valuable associate for the spring quarter. She said juggling work, an internship and school has been a challenge, but she expects to graduate in May.
