UHV to celebrate spring commencement on Saturday

More than 360 students are scheduled to walk in the University of Houston-Victoria’s commencement ceremony on Saturday and celebrate a major milestone in their lives.

“Commencement is a wonderful time for all of us to recognize the hard work of these students,” UHV President Tim Hudson said. “Everyone at UHV is looking forward to helping these graduates celebrate their accomplishments.”

Commencement will begin at 9 a.m. on the east side of the University West building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.

In addition, the UHV School of Nursing will hold a pinning ceremony for students graduating from the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Master of Science in Nursing program. The pinning ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. in The Victoria College Fine Arts Auditorium.

UHV Faculty Senate President Cindy Schnebly will serve as grand marshal of the university’s commencement ceremony. The deans of UHV’s four schools will award students their diplomas, and Hudson will confer the degrees. Outstanding graduates for the spring semester will be recognized, along with faculty members receiving awards for excellence in teaching, research and service.

University of Houston System Regent Kristen Lindley, who also is a UHV graduate student, will bring greetings on behalf of the board.

State Rep. Geanie Morrison, whose district includes DeWitt, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties, will deliver the keynote speech. Morrison is serving her sixth term in the Texas Legislature. During the most recent legislative session, Morrison sponsored House Bill 1056, which will allow UHV to add its FIRST 200 underclassmen in the fall.

In the event of inclement weather, commencement will be moved to Faith Family Church, 2002 E. Mockingbird Lane, and will begin at 4 p.m. Each graduate already has five tickets to distribute to their family and friends in case the ceremony is relocated to this smaller venue. If it becomes necessary to move commencement, information will be posted at www.uhv.edu or may be obtained by calling 361-570-4848 or 877-970-4848.
