UHV sophomore, former gymnast balances athletics, studies, wedding plans

Megan Ledwig

For many people, weekends are a chance to curl up in front of the TV, kick back and relax after a busy week at work or school.

University of Houston-Victoria sophomore Megan Ledwig isn’t one of those people.

Instead, she prefers to spend her time in the great outdoors. Whether it’s a quick jog, a game of softball or another activity, she just enjoys keeping busy.

“I’ve played sports all my life,” she said. “I’m a very active person.”

The 20-year-old’s love of athletics began during childhood, when she started taking dance and gymnastics lessons. Although she enjoyed both, gymnastics was the activity that really stuck.

“I kept with it for 14 years,” she said, explaining her tumbling skills even won her a title as state champion in 2001. “It’s so much fun. I’ll always love gymnastics.”

Athletics not only help Ledwig stay in shape, but also offer a bit of stress relief.

Another way she unwinds? The stray cats and dogs her family takes in.

“They help me take my mind off of things sometimes,” she said.

Ledwig, a Victoria native, graduated from Faith Academy in Victoria in 2009 and enrolled at Victoria College. When her younger sister began studies at UHV, she thought it was time for her to move on to the university, too.

She has enjoyed her experience thus far and is working toward a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Her end goal is to become a child psychologist.

In the meantime, she has plenty to keep her busy.

Not only does she have classes to balance, but she’s also in the grips of wedding planning. She will marry her fiancé, a recent UHV graduate and fellow athlete, in September.

“I’m loving the planning,” she said, explaining it helps that the couple is planning the event so far in advance. “It might be stressful if we were waiting until the last minute, but it’s more fun for us than anything.”

Ledwig admits her life can be busy and change is coming, but she looks forward to what the future holds.

“I’m so excited,” she said. “I can’t wait.”
