UHV prepares for second Jaguar Days event

Prospective students and their families tour a typical residence hall room during UHV’s Jaguar Day event on Nov. 15. Visiting students had the opportunity to get a firsthand look at UHV’s campus and get their questions answered in person during the event.

The University of Houston-Victoria is preparing to welcome a second wave of potential students to campus at the end of January.

The next Jaguar Day is scheduled for Jan. 31. The day will begin with check-in at 10 a.m. in the lobby of Jaguar Hall, 2705 Houston Highway. The event will continue until about 2 p.m. and is open to any interested student.

Billy Lagal

“If you are considering UHV, Jaguar Days are great times to get all of the answers to your questions about university life,” said Billy Lagal, associate director of UHV Admissions & Student Recruitment. “It’s really a convenient opportunity.”

The event will follow a similar format to the previous Jaguar Day, including a come-and-go information session in Jaguar Hall from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and tours of the UHV campus and Victoria. The information session will include representatives from all of UHV’s student-related departments and academic schools as well as some of the student organizations, said Jena West, senior coordinator for Letting Education Achieve Dreams & Student Recruitment. The previous event was attended by representatives from student groups such as the Student Government Association, African Student Association, United Nations Society and Spreading Motivation in Lives Everywhere.

“Being able to answer questions in one setting is an effective tool,” Lagal said. “It really helps students and their families out because they don’t have to make separate trips or phone calls to get their answers. They can knock out all their questions in one place.”

About 150 students signed up for the Nov. 15 event, which made it the largest Jaguar Day UHV has hosted, Lagal said. In addition to the good attendance, many of the students followed through by applying to UHV or are almost finished with their paperwork. More than 100 students have sent in an RSVP for the Jan. 31 event.

“The previous Jaguar Day event was really fun,” West said. “A lot of students participated and got good information. The students who came to the event were some our recruiters saw at previous recruitment events during which university staff went to them to share how UHV can help them make their mark. It was good to see them come and explore UHV for themselves.”

The last Jaguar Day event of the school year will be Feb. 28. To sign up for any of the Jaguar Days, go online to www.uhv.edu/jagday. Registration is not required to attend, but it helps the university with planning. If possible, visitors should sign up online by Jan. 30 for the Jan. 31 event.

For those who can’t attend Jaguar Days, personal tours are offered throughout the year. Visitors should fill out a tour request form online at www.uhv.edu/discover/visit-campus/.
