A website comparing U.S. online master’s degree programs has chosen four University of Houston-Victoria disciplines for its 2015 rankings.

Jeffrey Cass

OnlineMastersPrograms.org selected UHV’s degree options in special education, history, English and criminal justice as among the best graduate education experiences within their respective fields. The site praised UHV for its dedication to online and hybrid education, graduate-level studies and for providing academic and career services.

“It’s thrilling to receive recognition for several of our online graduate offerings,” said Jeffrey Cass, UHV provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We take great pride as a university in the academic quality of our online programs and the support system we have in place to make sure students succeed.”

UHV’s special education master’s program was ranked No. 27 overall and drew the second highest position in Texas. The Master of Education in special education can be earned completely online. The program is geared toward students from special and general education backgrounds and for those working in organizations serving the needs of people with disabilities.

“The UHV special education master’s degree prepares our graduates to engage in activities related to behavior intervention, programming and assessments,” said Fred Litton, dean of the UHV School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development. “I think this ranking is a testament to our terrific faculty and the development of quite a few thought-provoking online courses.”

The other three disciplines ranked by OnlineMastersPrograms.org are concentrations typically taken by students pursuing a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies. The rankings were:

  • History – No. 8 overall and second highest in Texas.
  • English – No. 10 overall and tops in Texas.
  • Criminal justice – No. 15 overall and second highest in Texas.

The UHV Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies is a unique program that combines multiple disciplines into one degree plan suited to students’ educational and career goals. Students select two concentrations from a dozen options, including history, English and criminal justice. In addition, students on their way to earning a Master of Science in publishing or a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing often take English courses as electives.

“I’m pleased to see three of our graduate-level fields of study receive national rankings,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “This goes to show that students obtaining a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies have no shortage of excellent courses from which to choose.”
