Prospective students invited to tour UHV during Jaguar Day

The University of Houston-Victoria is offering prospective students and their families a look into college life during the Jan. 28 Jaguar Day.

Prospective freshmen, transfer and graduate students are invited to see UHV firsthand and talk with university faculty, staff and students about majors, student life activities, campus jobs, financial aid and more.

Check-in for Jaguar Day begins at 9:30 a.m. in Jaguar Hall, 2705 Houston Highway. The event begins at 10 a.m., and students may come and go until it closes at 1:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, though students interested in coming should preregister before attending.

“The idea behind Jaguar Day is for prospective students to have a chance to talk with faculty members and student organization representatives so they can get more comfortable with the university before making their college decision,” said Perla Studer, a UHV senior recruitment coordinator.

Attendees will be able to tour the UHV campus and the city of Victoria. Campus tours will take place at 10, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m., and 12:15 p.m. Victoria tours will leave Jaguar Hall every hour on the hour.

Studer said students had a lot of questions about housing at the first Jaguar Day in November. Students can take tours of Jaguar Village to see where they will sleep, eat, study and socialize.

“The residence halls always are exciting for prospective students to see,” Studer said. “That’s where they are going to spend a lot of their time. Once they see the residence halls, they can visualize themselves staying there.”

Students will be able to meet with representatives from UHV Admissions, Financial Aid, Recruitment, Student Life, Career Services and Residence Life. They also can meet with advisors and faculty members from the university’s three schools – Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development – to learn more about UHV’s academic programs.

“Right off the bat, students will find out that our faculty members are approachable,” Studer said. “We encourage them to visit with professors. By doing so, students learn they can come talk with faculty members if they have questions in class.”

UHV’s jaguar mascot, jaX, will be on hand to take photos with attendees. UHV T-shirts and other apparel will be for sale in Jaguar Hall.

For those unable to attend the Jan. 28 event, the next Jaguar Day will be Feb. 25. To sign up to attend any of the Jaguar Days, visit www.uhv.edu/jagday.
