David Cockrum

“The internet has become an integral part of our society, and UHV has taken advantage of that by developing some excellent online programs,” said David Cockrum, UHV interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Our main goal as a university is to best meet the needs of our students. The online programs give students, especially those who are working, more flexibility while receiving an excellent education.”

The website only ranks accredited public or private nonprofit schools with at least one online bachelor’s or master’s degree. The schools are graded on a 100-point scale using tuition, financial aid, number and variety of programs, student-teacher ratio, graduation rate, placement and support services, academic and career counseling, employment services and loan default rate.

“UHV began offering online programs earlier than many schools, and that has allowed us to create an excellent system for our students,” said Jifu Wang, associate dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “Online development was included in our faculty evaluations for a long time, and we have created open, accessible programs for our students.”

The UHV School of Business Administration allows graduate students to earn their MBA completely online, and students taking face-to-face classes also are given access to the tools online students have, such as blackboard and online chat sessions. Because many MBA students are working full time, flexible access is essential, Wang said.

“We encourage all our professors to teach and develop excellent online courses,” Wang said. “In the business school and all of UHV, there is a strong emphasis on quality, accessibility and affordability. Our students have the advantage of being able to choose face-to-face or online programs that work best for them.”

The University of Houston-Victoria, located in the heart of the Coastal Bend region since 1973 in Victoria, Texas, offers courses leading to more than 80 academic programs in the schools of Arts & Sciences; Business Administration; and Education, Health Professions & Human Development. UHV provides face-to-face classes at its Victoria campus, as well as an instructional site in Katy, Texas, and online classes that students can take from anywhere. UHV supports the American Association of State Colleges and Universities Opportunities for All initiative to increase awareness about state colleges and universities and the important role they have in providing a high-quality and accessible education to an increasingly diverse student population, as well as contributing to regional and state economic development.
