UHV online English, business bachelor’s degrees earn accolades
A trio of University of Houston-Victoria undergraduate programs in English and business have made a national list of most affordable online degrees.
However, affordability is just one of the reasons for the rankings. UHV also scored points for an 18:1 student-faculty ratio, the percentage of students taking online classes and other factors.
UHV ranked No. 5 in Affordable Online English Degrees according to the website AffordableColleges.com. UHV was the only public Texas school that made the list.
In addition, two other UHV degrees were ranked:
- 11th – Affordable Online Bachelor’s Degrees in Operations Management
- 12th – Affordable Online Business Administration Degrees
The website evaluated schools by creating a score based on 11 factors: tuition, students receiving financial aid, net price, loan default rates, admission rates, enrollment rates, retention rates, graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio, number of programs and percentage of students taking at least one online course. UHV’s overall value score was 6.25 on a 1 to 10 scale.
“With small class sizes, reasonable tuition and talented faculty members, our English program has taken off,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “Even without a classroom, our online students enjoy many interactive elements, including discussions with each other. This external recognition further shows that we have a lot of offer students.”
A Bachelor of Arts in English provides students with a liberal arts education that can be valuable in a wide range of jobs and career fields in educational institutions, advertising agencies, radio and TV broadcasting, public relations firms, business and nonprofit organizations, government agencies, literary agencies and professional associations.
The degree also prepares student for graduate work in several fields, such as communication, journalism, law and linguistics. In addition, students have the option of taking classes toward teacher certification. Upon completion of certification exams, they are qualified to teach English in high school.
The degree is 120 credit hours, including 18 upper-division English credit hours and an additional 34 credit hours of electives, which can be applied toward a minor.
The 11th-place ranking is for UHV’s Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in management. UHV’s management courses expose students to managerial and administrative roles and responsibilities involved in leading and managing change within dynamic organizations.
The 12th place ranking is for all of UHV’s BBA programs. The university offers a choice of 10 concentrations.
