Former UHV president leads in fundraising competition

Former University of Houston-Victoria President Vic Morgan is in the lead against jaX, the university’s jaguar mascot, to try to raise $1,000 first to rappel down a 12-story office building in downtown Victoria.

Whoever wins will get to rappel down One O’Connor Plaza ahead of the other during the Nov. 3 Over the Edge Victoria fundraiser. All funds will benefit three Victoria nonprofit organizations: the Hispanic Council of Victoria, Challenged Athletes Dream Complex, and Victoria Business and Education Coalition.

The competition fundraiser was announced in April, and the university’s students, faculty and staff were encouraged to participate by donating to the cause and cheering for their university favorites. Morgan has raised $835 of his $1,000 goal and jaX has raised $95 toward his $1,000 goal, but donations can continue to be made to the fundraiser until Nov. 4.

“I’ve enjoyed participating in this fundraiser, and I look forward to going Over the Edge,” Morgan said. “I know the funds raised are going to good causes, so I encourage the UHV community and the community at large to support the activity by contributing to their favorite participant so that both jaX and I will achieve the $1,000 goal.”

As one of the three organizations benefiting from the fundraiser, the Hispanic Council of Victoria helps promote leadership and supports the economic development, growth and education of the Victoria County Hispanic community. The Challenged Athletes Dream Complex is raising funds to partner with the City of Victoria to build a new integrated playground where children without physical and mental challenges can play with children who have these challenges. The Victoria Business and Education Coalition increases support for Victoria youth through mentoring, character building activities, job readiness training and career exploration.

“jaX loves supporting and giving back to the Victoria community,” said Hilary Kofron, director of UHV Student Life. “Student Life strives to create and provide opportunities for a service-minded student population, and that’s why jaX is so excited to represent us by participating in this unique opportunity for a great cause.”

Supporters can choose to participate in the event by attending Over the Edge Victoria on Nov. 3 to watch those who have raised funds rappel down the building, or by donating or raising at least $1,000 to rappel down themselves.
